As Head of Design for Realtor.com's Growth Organization, I co-led the development of a comprehensive 3-5 year strategic vision to transform the company's approach to the rental market. Working alongside product, revenue, marketing, and engineering leadership partners under our Chief Growth Officer, we applied design thinking to guide our strategic process and create a roadmap that would fundamentally reshape Realtor.com's business model.
Challenge & Opportunity
Realtor.com had historically operated as a lead generation platform, connecting renters with landlords through a traditional pay-per-lead model. However, market dynamics and competitive pressures created an urgent need for transformation:
- Market Vulnerability: The for-sale market was softening due to affordability challenges, while rentals represented a counter-cyclical opportunity
- Competitive Threats: Major players like Zillow, CoStar, and Redfin were aggressively expanding into rentals
- Limited Value Creation: Our business model ended at the initial handshake, missing opportunities to add value throughout the user journey
- Fragmented Experience: Renters faced discrimination, fraud, and inefficient processes that we could address
